What if I can barely speak the language?
That is what this is for. You speak in your own language and it is interpreted into theirs as you talk, and what they say comes back to you in yours — on screen and as interpretation audio — so the conversation doesn't stall just because the words won't come.
How is this different from a translation app?
A translation app is something you hold out and pass back and forth. AWAI is a video call with interpretation switched on: you hear what the other person says as audio in your own language. You keep looking at each other while you talk, and afterward the conversation remains, sorted by topic.
How is this different from sending an email or a letter?
You can have one trial conversation before you meet in person. Email and letters take time to write, and until a reply comes you have no sense of how the other side is doing.
Does the host family need to prepare or pay anything?
They just open the link. No account is needed, and only the person who created the room pays.
How far does the free tier go?
With a free account you can try about 10 minutes with your language and theirs — enough for one first call. Adding more interpreted languages shortens that time. For more, see the pricing page.
Does it work on a phone?
It runs in the browser, so it works on both PC and phone. No app install is needed.
Is it only for one-on-one calls?
No — up to 12 people can join the same room, so the whole host family and your whole family can talk together.
Can it be used with languages other than English?
Major languages are supported. You can see how it works in the demo. One call can use up to six languages in total.
Is the call recorded and kept?
There's no recording file. Audio streams through only long enough to be transcribed, and nothing is written to an audio file, so there's nothing sitting on a disk to leak or delete later.
Do you analyze the video?
No. Meetings run audio-only, and the camera feed never reaches the part of the system that does the analysis.
Who can see a meeting?
Only its participants. Guests lose access the moment the meeting ends. The report is visible to the host alone.
Is the conversation kept?
It is kept organized by topic, so you can reread it later. You can delete it when you no longer need it.
